Modern Masters Give-A-Way (Transforming a Cement Floor in to a Patina’d Copper and Rusted Iron look)

The Purple Painted Lady is so excited about opening our 4th location in the city of Rochester, NY. It will be located at 650 South Avenue- which is in the heart of South Wedge and we will open our doors later in August.

We have literally gutted the space.

Here is a BEFORE photo of where we started: (take note to even the check out counter. Below you will see what we have done with it to spruce it up.)

OKay- just a reminder – the image BELOW is a BEFORE PHOTO!

We have since done the following to the space:

* tore out the tan leopard print carpet and replaced it with wood.

* pulled about 1,000 nails out of the wall and ceiling, patched the dry wall, and painted the walls a pretty silvery grey/blue. (I like how it compliments the ceilig!)

* put in all new electric and hung new chandeliers (actually, Brett- the buff guy standing next to Judy in the photo above did all of our electric.)

* installed a full prep sink and work counter and the bathroom has been gutted with a new vanity installed.

* and everything else has been scrubbed…multiple times over!

Phew! It makes me tired just writing it all out. (which is kind of pathetic since I hired contractors or promised champagne and caviar to Judy to do most of this work for me. LOL!)

This week Judy will be transforming the concrete bathroom floor into something amazing using Modern Masters Inc. products! The Modern Masters products we use will make the floor look like patina copper and rusted iron!

MATERIAL LIST TO CREATE A LOOK LIKE ABOVE:

Modern Masters Metal Effects Acid Blocking Primer

Copper Reactive Metallic Paint

Iron Reactive Metallic Paint

MODERN MASTERS GREEN PATINA AGING SOLUTION FOR COPPER

MODERN MASTERS BLUE PATINA AGING SOLUTION FOR COPPER

Modern Masters Rust Activator

Modern Masters Permacoat Xtreme

Spray Bottles 12 ounce

You will also need:

Either a 2″ or 4″ roller with a tray

Chip Brush

Hydrogen Peroxide (just a tablespoon – amount depends on the size of your project)

Small plastic spray bottles to mist aging solutions or rust activator (we used travel size shampoo dispencers)

Papertowel/rags for clean up

Anyway- this effect is pretty cool stuff, huh?

Anything will be better than what the floor currently is. See the image below. (waah, waah, waah) : (

Using the Iron Reactive Paint and Copper Metallic Paint– you can make virtually any surface look like patinad copper or rusted iron!

PREP WORK ON CONCRETE FLLOR:

So, Judy and Anne started the process of painting the bathroom concrete floor. First- since this location was rented prior- the floor needed a good cleaning.

Judy is super fast when she is on a mission, In fact- she was so excited to start this project- I could barely get a photo of her cleanig the floor. Now keep in mind- she bartered a bottle of Dom Pérignon Champagne and caviar for doing this for me!

So, using Mineral Spirits and Krud Kutter and a bunch of sponges- the floor was santized! A clean water rinse was done and then – the floor was left to dry thoroughly.

If there had been flaking paint from a previous project- all of that would have been removed.

Next- Judy used plain old Elmer’s Glue and created a beed across the door way to build up a slight little dam. She let the glue dry and then – did a second beed. She did this because most of the products we will be using are VERY fluid- this will help keep them contained into the bathroom.

Once the glue was totally dry- then Judy moved to Step 1 below.

STEP 1 – Use the Modern Masters Metal Effects Acid Blocking Primer:

We have the gallon size of the Modern Masters Metal Effects Acid Blocking Primer that had been sitting for a while so we needed to mix it really well until all the thicker components at the bottom got stirred in. (see image below) This “Acid Blocking Primer” is very importantbecause it creates a base or barrier for the all of the other products to sit on top of. It also gives either the Copper Metallic Paint or the Iron Reactive paint something to grip to, depending on what it is you are doing and the type of surface it is. Since most of you would be using a 16 ounce or 4 ounce container of the Acid Blocking Primer, just check the plastic container by hand. It is doubtful you will have as much sitting on the bottom as we did with the gallon sized packaging.

APPLICATION OF ACID BLOCKING PRIMER:

Judy then poured the Modern Masters Metal Effects Acid Blocking Primer into the small roller pan that came with the roller. Using the roller she applied two uniform. coats of the Modern Masters Metal Effects Acid Blocking Primer. Make sure the first coat is thoroughly dry before applying a second. In the hard to reach places- she used a chip brush.

For this product to work well, YOU MUST BE ABLE TO LAY THE SURFACE FLAT. Since we were doing a floor- this did not apply to us. But FYI for most of the looks of these products because we are dealing with fluids, if you do not lay the section you are applying the products to, you will end up with an effect that looks “runny” vs the images we show here. So, lay a hutch down on it’s back. OR, flip a dresser over onto its side. You have creative options to make this work.

STEP 2 – Use the Modern Masters Metal Effects Copper Reactive Metallic Paint:

WE DID 2 COATS

Pour some of your Modern Masters Metal Effects Copper Reactive Metallic Paint into the tray of your roller. Be careful to only pour a small amount at a time. You do not want to be pouring left over copper paint from the tray back into the original container and risk contamidating the remainder. This stuff is a bit pricey, so don’t waste any of it. Have Syran Wrap available to cover your tray in-between coats.

Judy rolled a layer of the copper paint onto the floor and let it dry. Once dry- she applied a second coat.

** What is important to know – is that you apply the Patina Aging Soltions over the Copper paint when it is wet. So, since we we do two coats. Let the first coat thoroughly dry- then after the second coat- you immedaitely apply the Patina Aging Solutions.

While the first coat of copper was drying… Judy poured the MODERN MASTERS GREEN PATINA AGING SOLUTION FOR COPPER and MODERN MASTERS BLUE PATINA AGING SOLUTION FOR COPPER from their large containers into smaller spray / squirt bottles.

While the copper was drying, they poured the green and blue patina into 2 clearly marked spray bottles and 2 of the small travel-sized containers. They also poured rust activator into a spray bottle and hydrogen peroxide into a travel-sized container.

Judy spooned the iron into a small container and mixed it with water.

Judy worked in manageable sections – approximately 12-18 inches, working her way from the far back corner – around the vanity — to the exit door.

It takes a while for the copper to dry, so don’t paint yourself into a corner.

She started this series of steps by painting a second layer of copper paint.

Remember, the copper paint needs to be wet for the activators to work.

Judy sprayed or squeezed the green patina activator in random spots on the wet copper. While waiting for it to start to turn green, she flicked iron on the wet copper floor in a cohesive swirly line and then sprayed the rust activator on the iron.

When she could start to see green patina, she sprayed and squeezed the blue patina activator.

In some places she let the green and blue meet but in others kept them separate.

She also took care to leave some of the copper exposed in little spots.

She squeezed some of the hydrogen peroxide onto the blue patina activator to make it look lighter.

She created a dam with blue shop cloths where the activators started to run in sections that did not have wet copper since the floor they were working on wasn’t completely level.

If after doing this step of the project- you would like more of the copper aged, just paint over those small sections and re-apply the aging patina solution.

Initially our floor looked like it had a Cheetah pattern, so we went back over some spots to make it more uniform.

It takes a while for all the activators to do their magic and dry, so Judy and Anne cleaned up for the day.

The Purple Painted Lady loves what Indigo Tones did with their Chalk Paint®!

Kerry owns a business called Indigo Tones in Pittsford, NY. Kerry is a personal color analyst and color is her life!

Kerry decided to repaint her dining room table to freshen it up. Below is her table BEFORE she started her project.

Kerry’s favorite color is Florence. In fact ~ on a side note, she said if you are shopping for an outfit- Florence is the one color that will universally look good on anyone, no matter their skin tone.

Back to the table though – after Florence was painted, Kerry added some dimension by color washing and hard brushing on some Arles and Provence…….finishing off with dark wax.

Arles is a beautiful sunflower – golden yellow.

Provence and Florence are similar colors. But Provence reminds me of the color of a Tiffany jewelry box and Florence is more of the patina color you get from copper.

Kerry’s goal was to create the same rich tones from the tole trays in the background and I think she got it.……. She also loves the way the wax softens everything.

Table Set in Chalk Paint® and Java Gel

The Purple Painted Lady loves sharing a great “before & after” story!

This one is by Anne French…she is the woman smiling below at you!

Anne did a table set using Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan and products by General Finishes. And personally, I think she did a fabulous job!

Anne wrote that this table and chairs set was a big job, but I love the way it turned out! My client wanted something rustic, yet sophisticated so we went with kind of a faux zinc finish.

PREPPED FOR GENERAL FINISHES:
I started by removing each of the seats so they could be sanded down and prepped for staining. The chair backs were also sanded and taped off since part of the chair would be painted and part would be stained.

The table top was also completely sanded and prepped for staining. For the stained sections I used my favorite – General Finishes Java Gel.

I find it is very forgiving and easy to work with. I did one coat of stain and then wiped off the excess using an old cotton t-shirt.Once the stain had dried thoroughly I applied about 5 coats of General Finishes High Performance Topcoat in Satin for added durability.

I used a fine steel wool (grade 0000) in between each coat of sealer for a nice smooth finish. I like to use extra coats of sealer on seats and table tops since they will get lots of use. (From The Purple Painted Lady- make sure to respect drying times between coats)

Next, I started in on the painting portion. (I disassembled the table first, which made it much easier to work with since I knew I would be doing multiple steps).

FAUX ZINC FINISH (Random Brush Strokes):
To create the faux zinc finish I started off by applying two coats of Annie Sloan Graphite, using brush strokes in all different directions. Remember that Graphite is a dark slate color with purple/blue undertones. This is NOT a pure black. Can you see the brush strokes in the image below?

COLOR WASH:

This created some really nice texture to “catch” the color wash. I did a color wash using Annie Sloan Paris Gray, using about five parts water to three parts Paris Gray.

I applied the wash with a chip brush and then rubbed off the excess using an old cloth.

Finally, I applied about 3 coats of the General Finishes High Performance Topcoat in Satin, fine sanding with the steel wool in between the coats.My client was thrilled with the finished product! I have since used this faux zinc finish on multiple other projects and it is always a winner.

PROJECT TIP FROM ANNE:

When applying a color wash, be careful not to use too much pressure when wiping off the excess as it can pull off some of the base color and potentially create an unwanted distressed look to your piece.

Dark Wax Tips and Tricks (How To Use Dark Wax Suggestions) BELOW:

DO I NEED TO USE DARK WAX?

Okay- I am guessing you are reading this post because you want to use dark wax. However, do you need to use the dark wax? Of course not! That is like saying you MUST have ketchup with your fries or sugar in your tea. But, if you do use dark wax…..you REALLY want to have a clear wax base BEFORE applied prior to the dark wax since it:

1. Allows the dark wax to move easier

2. Prevents the stain in the dark wax from penetrating and staining the paint directly

3. Having a clear wax base allows you to remove the dark wax on top or lighten it, if needed. (read on for more information)

DARK HAIRED PETITE WAX BRUSH DETAILS:

As for the dark bristles, no more will you accidentally pick up the wrong brush to apply your dark wax with! Same texture of bristle, same quality – just dark hairs! Same size as the white hair petite brush that we have carried for the last 5 years!

Some TIPS for applying DARK WAX:

1. I always recommend having a clear wax application on your piece prior (there are some exceptions)
2. Try mixing the dark with clear wax together to lighten it up and make it more”spreadable.”
3. Try making the dark wax into a “glaze” by adding some Mineral Spirits. The amount of MS depends on the end result you want, but do not mix more than one to one.
4. As long as that clear wax base is there- if you put on too much dark wax- use some clear wax on a rag to work like an eraser.
5. Remember, once you have dark wax on…..if you apply more clear wax on top of it- it can lift some of the stain and change or RUIN what you just created and love.
6. Don’t leave the dark wax gummy or tacky on the flat surfaces since it will take FOREVER to set and cure. It is OK to leave it thicker in the crevices of grooves!
7. Experiment with it! You do not need to slather it every where initially.
8. Try applying a little dark wax strategically in corners or seams of door panels and use a rag to help soften/feather out the look. It can take some experience to manipulate on large pieces- like the side of a tall hutch – so, start off small and build your confidence.

9. Dark wax looks best when it has something to grip to. Especially on large, flat surfaces it can be intimidating like I mentioned above. So, at the very beginning of your project- use your paint brush and create a little texture with your Chalk Paint® – so when it dries, the dark wax has something to grip to.

10. Here is another great tip from Jaclyn Kulfan => My tip: if you only want the dark wax to to go into the small crevices, like the edges of a cabinet door, use a small artists paint brush to control the amount of wax that goes in the crevice if you do not want to darken the surrounding paint color. It helps those edges pop!

11. Here is another great tip from Jennifer Gipson Fry=> I love mixing with mineral spirits. Also buffing with steel wool will take some off if there’s too much and shine your piece up well. I love how smooth and finished wax makes a piece!

12. Here is another great tip from Jennifer Cohn-Colwill =>Always have two wax brushes, one for clear, one for dark!

13. Here is another great tip from Ann Linhorst => Have patience with dark wax. Step back and take a deep breath before panicking. (The Purple Painted Lady recommends a glass of wine prior to using too)

14. Here is another great tip from Stephanie Amber => Start small…just a bit of dark wax – you can always add more and Marie Lou said, => My tip: Less is more

15. Here is another great tip from Nancy Steward => Have a wiping rag ready. If you aren’t sure how much “dark” you want wipe on the dark and wipe off. You can always add more but being ready to remove will give you a feel for how much you want.

Paris Grey, Graphite and Coco Chalk Paint® Buffet

The Purple Painted Lady loves to share pieces that have been completed by her customers. One customer in particular, is Nikki Counahan. She is also know as The Grateful Painter.

I asked Nikki to share some information about this buffet that she recently completed because I think it is helpful to understand how others use products and to learn from one another.

Here is the fantastic information Nikki shared with me:

I bought this piece from an online auction. I spent more than I normally would on this buffet but I have always wanted to paint something like this so it was worth it!

I am always so excited to start painting a piece as soon as I get it home but this one needed just a bit of prep work before I could dive in. Luckily it was in near perfect condition when I picked it up.

One of the cabinet doors was a bit tough to close– the top of the door just seemed to not fit into its space. I tried to adjust the screws in the hinges but it wasn’t budging. I have this handy dandy tool called a “surform plane” that I use in these situations. It basically shaves down the wood making it easier for doors and drawers to fit. Make sure to smooth the surface out with sand paper after using the surform plane otherwise it will be left a bit uneven.

SHELLAC:

This piece was a very bright mahogany wood and I knew it was going to have MAJOR bleed through. Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac is the quickest and easiest way to make sure you have NO bleed through.

I ran sand paper over the entire piece just to rough up the surface, wiped it down with water and bit of mineral spirits, then let it dry before starting. I did two thin coats (of shellac) just to make sure the piece was completely covered. I lightly sanded with 120 grit sand paper before I applied the second coat. Let each coat dry for about an hour and make sure to dust off the piece after sanding! This is definitely an “extra” step but it is VERY important!! (per The Purple Painted Lady ~ sanding between coats of shellac will help prevent paint from crackling)

PAINT:

Once the shellac was dry I started by painting the body in two quick coats of Annie Sloan Coco and the top in two coats of Graphite.

I ordered Annie Sloan Paris Grey from The Purple Painted Lady and I knew the color would compliment Coco perfectly!

If you’re like me as soon as you get a new piece of furniture you want to paint it IMMEDIATELY and the best part about ordering from The Purple Painted Lady is her fast shipping. The paint was at my front door as soon as I was ready to paint!!

VERY HELPFUL HINT FROM THE GRATEFUL PAINTER ON HER PAINTING TECHNIQUE:

I poured a bit of Coco, Paris Grey and a mix of Graphite + Paris Grey on separate plates.

I lightly dipped each side of my brush in each color and then started painting. The technique I used was so simple!!!

I messily painted the colors on in every direction, blending them just enough that they didn’t look obvious. One coat of this technique did the trick.

DRY BRUSH:

I wanted to highlight all of the pretty details on this piece so I dry brushed just a bit of Annie Sloan Old White. Barely dip the edge of the brush just on the surface on the paint and then wipe off the excess with a paper towel. You hardy want ANY paint at all on the brush! I lightly feathered the brush over the details until I was happy with the look.

APPLYING A WASH:

I decided that I wanted to add some dimension to the top of the piece as well so I mixed a wash with 50% Paris Grey and 50% water. I painted the wash over the top and let it sit for a minute or two before wiping it back. It was subtle but enough to add a bit of character.

TOP COAT USED ON THIS PROJECT:

Next, I applied General Finishes High Performance Top Coat over the entire piece. I used a foam brush on the bottom half of the buffet to make sure I could get into the small grooves of the details. Its easy to see brush strokes in a sealant with any kind of sheen so I used a small foam roller for the top. I was able to achieve a smooth and seamless finish with this type of application. I applied two coats, sanding in between with steel wool.

Once the top coat was dry I used General Finishes Glaze Effects in Van Dyke Brown. I chose brown glaze over black because I wanted to compliment/bring out more of the Coco rather than both of the grays. I applied the glaze with a foam brush just along the edges and in the details of the drawer pulls and appliqués.

Only glaze small sections at a time as it can get VERY messy! I painted it on and quickly wiped it off using an old t-shirt. This leaves the glaze only in the grooves and gives an aged look!

HELPFUL GLAZE SUGGESTION:

When using any type of glaze or wax to make a piece look antique I always use a bit over the entire piece, including the top.

I painted on a thick coat of the glaze and let it sit for about 30 seconds before wiping it back. It left behind a very subtle look (hardly noticeable at all) but made the piece look more uniform. I let the glaze dry for about two hours before applying one final coat of General Finishes High Performance Top Coat in Satin.
