The Purple Painted Lady® receives a lot of calls and emails regarding product questions. One that seems popular lately is, “What is the difference between Annie Sloan Chalk Paint®- Wax VS Soft Wax?”
I see new product with different names
Is chalk paint wax different from soft wax? How so ?
And what about the lacquer?
It sounds like they are all matte unless they're buffed
Annie Sloan does not have a “new” wax product, BUT she does have new branding and product labels ….which has caused a little confusion.
So, the “soft wax” and “Chalk Paint® Wax” are the SAME product. Nothing has changed regarding the product or it’s composition or it’s qualities. : )
When using Chalk Paint® on furniture or cabinetry- I prefer to seal it using Chalk Paint® Wax.
Chalk Paint® Wax is water resistant. So, if you have a spill that happens- you can wipe it off and the surface will be fine. BUT any standing water for lengthy amounts of time, could cause issues. But long standing water or spills can cause an issue with Lacquer too.
Truly – any after-market product you are using- is not meant to have standing water on it for extended periods. Coasters or place mats should always be used. My dining room table is stained wood and I always use a place mat on it to protect it and to keep it looking beautiful.
For furniture and cabinetry, I personally feel that wax is so much easier to use versus Lacquer. For example, you can begin using your using your piece immediately after your wax application versus Lacquer that has a dry time of 12 hours. But if you are painting floors, tile or steps, then Lacquer is the way to go!
Lacquerwill only have a matte to satin finish. Lacquercannot be buffed to change the sheen or to make it shinier…..but Chalk Paint® Wax can!
Over the next year- you will see all of Annie’s products changing over to this new labeling. We love it and are excited about it!

These floor projects using with Chalk Paint® on wood floor, tile and Linoleum are just spectacular.
Here is one of my favorite blogs to follow, Dana at HOUSE*TWEAKING. Dana is a pharmacist by trade but her passion is houses. She is seriously talented in her vision. She recently painted a tile floor entry to look like slate using Graphite Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan and then protected it with Annie’s Matte Lacquer.
Tile floor project by HOUSE*TWEAKING
Just a disclaimer, usually over dark colored Chalk Paint® you should use Annie Sloan Gloss Lacquer since the flattening agent in the Matte can look hazey.
Dana was clever though and wanted that potential haze to make the tile look more like authentic slate.

Check out this wood floor fixer upper project by our friend Amy Smith – who is an entrepreneur and has had multiple successful businesses.
Picking out colors of Chalk Paint® at The Purple Painted Lady
This new chapter she just began is being the caretaker for the Taylor House 1810 at 2941 West Lake Road in Cazenovia, NY. They will be doing an exciting new launch of their gorgeous bed and breakfast in early January 2020….and will be sharing more photos. But we just had to share what they did to their floor using Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.
However, we wanted to give you a little taste of how they are using Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan and inspiration from blogs like Quintessence on this journey.
Amy’s Inspiration for her floor transformation
Amy had some restoration to the wood floor and the repairs did not fit in with the previous wood stain.

Amy had a vision and with Athenian Black, Emperor’s Silk Chalk Paint® and patience ~ she is creating something gorgeous.

……and then she used Annie’s GLOSS Lacquer to seal the floor. To read more about using Lacquer- visit this post HERE. The whole bed and breakfast is really coming together!
Once the Taylor House 1810 does their formal debut- The Purple Painted Lady will make a road trip to visit Amy and do a Facebook LIVE. We will give you a tour and discuss the projects Amy did and let you ask any questions to get real answers! I cannot wait- it is going to be gorgeous!!!!
Next up is a project from an Annie Sloan Stockist named Josh Mintoft who owns Martha Heritage in Sheffield – he transformed his old tile that was a terra cotta red to something current, fresh and very clean looking!
Josh cleaned his floor well and followed up with an additional rinse of fresh water to ensure there was not soap residue left behind, or any dirt. He then made sure the floor was totally dry before he began. Especially, in the grout lines.
He was not too concerned about if he accidentally covered some grout with the French Linen Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan because he knew once he added the stencil…there would be enough movement- no one would really notice!
Josh stated he used a brush, and managed to get away with one coat generally of the French Linen – but touched up in places. Then he stenciled and applied the Lacquer.
This Linoleum floor was completed by Maddie with her sister and mom. They used Graphite Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan. They sealed the floor using two solid coats of Annie’s Gloss Lacquer. Most importantly- they wanted to share to take your time cleaning the floor. It is one of the most important steps…along with taping the perimeter to protect the walls. Continue reading →

Has your paint separated within seconds after applying it to a piece of furniture?
Often people immediately jump to that cleaner was left behind however, that is not always the case. I will often look at the whole piece. If it was the cleaner, it would typically cause the paint to repel all over or in random areas, versus only on some of the sections of it – and where the problem is, it covers that entire surface totally. So, if the sides of a piece are fine, and only the top or the front is having this issue, it most likely is based on the material used there. Think about it, often in the construction of furniture, multiple materials are used. Think how often end caps of kitchen cabinets are a composite but the cabinet doors are all wood.
Sometimes certain materials – like laminate is coated with a topcoat that can cause the paint to separate. If I see this happening after my first brush stroke, I usually will wipe the paint off and lightly sand to scuff the surface. Sand in the same direction you plan on applying the paint or that the wood grain goes. Don’t waste your paint by having to use extra coats to get it to cover.
This issue may be more common when painting a piece from IKEA, or Target or …for me (The Purple Painted Lady®) – it was an old piece from The Bombay Co.
Another possibility from fellow Chalk Paint® stockist Gypsy Lovell shared that this could because the furniture is made with silica …..which is similar to Annie’s Mix Mat. Notice when you put paint on the Mat, it will also do this.
The paint literally separated and no mater how many coats you apply- it keeps doing this! (So, don’t waste paint and stop after applying the first coat on the first section)
To remedy this from happening- you can lightly sand it to scuff the surface. Sand in the same direction you plan on applying the paint or that the wood grain goes (if it has a wood looking surface). To fix the cheap pressboard furniture that may be causing this issue – you can also sand it lightly and put multiple thin coats of Chalk Paint® on waiting at least 12 hours between each.
According to Barb S.- who was a Technical Resource for Annie Sloan stockists, she stated,
“For years now we have been recommending to a customer to first thoroughly sand their IKEA piece (and Formica too) to break the surface tension (unless it’s been finished with thermafoil, which cannot be painted).
Then apply a thin coat of Chalk Paint®. Let paint dry and then wait 48 hours to allow the paint to bond.
Finish with proceeding painting in whichever manner you like.”
The Purple Painted Lady® recommends adding a little water to your Chalk Paint® also. No more than than 20%.
So, if you have one cup of Chalk Paint® – take a 1/8 measuring cup and fill with water and add to the paint and mix well. Remember – you can always add more water- BUT don’t waste your paint by adding too much and making it too thin!
