Typography OPTIONS ………Graphite & French Linen Dresser

When it comes to adding typography to a piece, there are multiple ways to do it.

  1.  PROJECTOR METHOD:   Personally, I prefer using a projector.  That is how I created most of the pieces you will see done by me, like this Coco dresser.  I find this way the easiest since just by moving the projector closer or further away – I can manipulate the image to be bigger or smaller.  It is also easy for me to combine different elements from various images, just by swapping out the transparency.  Click HERE to read a post on “HOW TO” use a projector.

2. TRANSFER GEL METHOD: Or, some people prefer using a decoupage or transfer method.  I find that this may not always be 100% reliable and it takes some skill.  (well, I guess all methods take some skill, and I prefer option #1)  But again, many of our customers like to use a transfer medium as described in this post HERE.

And then, we have ………..

3. Super Chacopaper:  Then, there is Meryl Gartside’s way.  We were excited to see her “before & after” photos!  And we think this dresser that Meryl painted for her husband turned out beautiful!

Meryl wrote me:

About the dresser:

I did this piece to be used as my husband’s dresser in our newly remodeled bedroom. I chose the color Graphite because it seemed to be neutral and also a distinctly masculine color.

Graphite is a rich color – close to being a slate, or think …dark pencil lead. Depending on the orientation of the surface painted- it can appear darker or lighter. It does have depth and interest- and clearly plays wonderfully with other pieces painted in a true black.  But note that it is NOT a true black.

Here is the “BEFORE” picture of my Craigslist find:

After cleaning (it with Mineral Spirits and doing a clean water rinse) I then did a light sanding, and applied 2 coats of Graphite, slightly watering down the second coat because I was going for a smooth finish.

I did 2 coats of French Linen on the top, also adding a little water to the second coat for a smooth finish.

French Linen is an incredible color. To me it rivals a piece from Pottery Barn. It is a timeless & classic color. It has a bit of grey to it compared to a similar Chalk Paint® color, Coco. Coco is more brown.

I found the typography on The Graphics Fairy.

Meryl Gartside Graphic The Purple Painted Lady

I enlarged the image to the size I wanted by making a Xerox copy at Staples. Then I found this amazing Super Chacopaper at Michaels which allowed me to trace (in white) an image onto a dark background.

Meryl Gartside Super Transfer Paper Michaels The Purple Painted Lady

Meryl thinks this Chacopaper is great stuff! It somewhat “sticks” to the surface as you trace, so there is no way it will shift around. The one drawback is that it will smudge onto the surface below if you lean on it while you are tracing. I discovered this (horrified) when I peeked under the tracing the first time to make sure it was transferring the image. To prevent further smudging, I slipped a piece of parchment paper under where I was leaning on the surface, and re-positioned it out of the way as I traced my image. (The smudge which I had inadvertently created, wiped off easily later with water.)

At this point, I took a break, and didn’t work on the piece for about 3 weeks. I had psyched myself out to the point where I was very nervous about painting the typography. Much time had already been invested, and I was afraid to mess up at this point.

Back at it 3 weeks later, I got up the courage to go over the typography with a fine point Sharpie Oil base paint pen. It wasn’t as difficult as I had feared, but I was ultra careful to avoid any blobs with the paint pen (my biggest fear) by dragging the pen tip on a sample board periodically (which had been painted in Graphite.) There were a few issues with the paint pen not flowing smoothly all the time, but I managed to avoid any major blobs on the actual drawer itself.

Once the typography was completed and dried, I waxed the dresser in a coat of Annie’s clear wax. I did some light distressing around a few edges, then gave everything a second coat of clear wax. I have read how dark wax makes graphite look even darker and richer and I had considered using it, but I was happy with the richness of the color just using the clear wax. Any white lines that were there from the chacopaper simply disappeared when I waxed it.

I used the original glass pulls for the drawers. Because they were over 100 years old they had gotten very cloudy. I soaked them in denture cleaner (a tip I discovered through research) and now they are bright and clear.

Meryl wrote us, I want to say that from what I have found, you are the very best resource for chalk painting supplies and information on the Internet. I live in an area where there are no workshops near me. ? So, last winter when I set out to explore the world of chalk painting, your website (and online store) helped me more than any other single resource that I found. Thank you for that.

Hope you enjoyed reading what Meryl created with her Chalk Paint®.

Pearl Plaster by Artisan Enhancements on a Dining Room Set

Lookie, lookie at this beautiful dining set that was transformed by Carrie Maddox.
The Purple Painted Lady Pearl Plaster Old White Coco Scumble

Carrie used products by Artisan Enhancements and Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.

Carrie wrote us:

On the table, I used Pearl Plaster, ASCP in Old White, and a little Scumble to thin it out so my drying time was longer. I found that when I used a brush, it left brush marks that I really didn’t like so I went to garage and looked around for something to use: a putty knife!! Perfect!! When I applied my mixture, my knife was almost flat to the table and I always put a little pressure on the knife to make it smooth. It wasn’t perfect, but I didn’t want it that way. On the base of the table, I used ASCP in CoCo and then applied thinned plaster directly over the paint.

Glamorous is my middle name. (Not really, but it should be!)

The chairs have my heart though. I found them at Goodwill and they were still pricey because they were HENREDON chairs!! I. could. not. pass. them. up! Never in my lifetime will that ever happen again, I’m sure.

I painted the entire chair in ASCP Old White to match the table. It took about 4 coats on the fabric because the color kept bleeding through. I was persistent though and finally succeeded.

Helpful Hint When Painting Fabric: Let completely dry between coats.

I used clear and dark wax to age the chairs and they were beautiful, but not quite right. They were a little dull and I wanted that glamorous almost shabby chic look so I treaded lightly on using the plaster, but bravely went to it. I was nervous about using it over the wax and because I had thinned it down, I wasn’t certain how it would take. It did give the wax a challenge, but after a couple of coats of plaster I found SUCCESS!! I used the same mixture I used on the table (ASCP in Old White, a little Scumble, and little pearl plaster and painted all the wood again. After the plaster dried, which doesn’t take very long, I used the dark wax again and aged the chairs right over the plaster. Ta da!!! Perfect!!!

Dry Brushing Tips with Chalk Paint®

Dry Brushing is a technique where you off load most of the paint from your paint brush so there is minimal left.  So minimal, that after you apply the paint- it is almost dry already.  You are applying the paint very sparingly.  Often, I use a dry brush technique to achieve a specific look.

When I say “off load” basically it means you are wiping a lot of the paint off your brush…or taking your brush and painting on another surface with the goal to remove as much paint as possible off your bristles.

Here is an example of dry brushing Old White Chalk Paint® over a wood cabinet.

If you have come into our Macedon, NY location on a weekend, you have probably met Courtney.  She is part of the team at THE PURPLE PAINTED LADY™ and is super talented!  (Courtney is on the left in the photo below)

And if you have needed help with a project, she is extremely knowledgeable about the products we sell!  Also in the photo on the right, is Britni.  Britni is also part of our team and is also extremely helpful, caCourtney Britni Patio Umbrella The Purple Painted ladyring and product savvy!  I think of these two as “peas and carrots” as when you see one of them, the other is not far behind!  Sometimes I call them “Fric & Frac.”  They often work together and like to think of themselves as “The Purple Painted Lady Dream Team.”

Well, on December 26th, 2015, Courtney did a dry brush demo on an old cabinet at our Macedon store using Old White Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.

The Purple Painted Lady Old White Open Lid Quart Chalk Paint

Courtney was experimenting with this technique for the first time and I asked her to do a write up regarding some of the most important lessons she learned as to help others who are interested in trying this.

But first, here is the piece she completed with Britni modeling next to it.

Dry Brushing The Purple Painted Lady Old White Chalk Paint Annie Sloan

Courtney’s “How to Dry Brush” Tips:

1.) Use a brush with a flat edge or bristles cut in a straight line versus a round, domed top brush. The Purple Painted Lady Annie LARGE FLAT PAINT BRUSH

2. Have enough paint on your brush but not enough to paint a full solid line.

3.) Hold your brush more at an angle to get a better drag.

4.) Starting at the edge is good, but that will also be the area that receives the most paint…so, make sure to alternate the sides you start from! (For example- when doing the top of a cabinet or dresser- brush once starting from the left side, then next starting from the right side.)

5.) Work in linear sections so that your strokes look fluid.Dry Brush Technique Chalk Paint Courtney The purle Painted Lady 4

6.) It’s a good idea to have a damp cloth near you, that way you can blot your brush on the cloth, pick up some water and feather out the paint a bit easier.

7.) If the piece has architecture, alternate the sides you brush it from as so to have the paint laid from different directions.

8.) Paint inset panels first before painting the borders.

9.) For large surfaces, remember dry brush in the middle also to even out the appearance, versus just painting inward from the edges.

10.) Don’t be afraid to use sandpaper to soften strokes that may have been applied a little too heavy once paint is dry.

11.) Take drawers out before painting.Dry Brush The Purple Painted Lady close up

12.) Do not dip your brush into a cup of water to feather out the paint. Your brush will pick up too much water and create a wash which is a totally different look.

13.) Use a paper plate to pour some paint onto.  This is more important if using an older brush that may shed, since it is best that the stray bristles go into a plate or paper towel versus the quart of paint.

14.) Use a smaller Artisan brush to paint smaller ledges or hard to reach corners versus attempting to use a large paint brush.

15.) Dry brush WITH the grain of the wood.

Dry Brush Courtney The Purple Painted Lady Drawers

16.) As you drag the paint, lift up on the brush so it looks fluid and the stroke doesn’t stop abruptly.  Think of this as feathering out the end of the brush stroke.

17.  Lastly- always remember to take a photo of your piece “BEFORE” you start you painting project (unlike us, who forgot) and then share your photos on The Purple Painted Lady’s Facebook page HERE.

Painting over Mahogany by Janene Buchler

Lookie, lookie at what our customer Janene Buchler painted using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® in the colors Old White and French Linen!

Janene Buchler The Purple Painted Lady AFTER Old White French Linen picmonkey

It is a 1950’s shield mirror dresser that she painted using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® in the colors Old White and French Linen.

DESCRIPTION OF COLORS USED:

Old White is more of a soft cream color.  There is the slightest hue of yellow in it. This “top hat” dresser below shows the color nicely.  It does play well with almost every other color in Annie’s suite.  But in case you want to read a post that describes Annie’s other “whites” and light colors comparing them to Old White, click HERE.

Old White dresser close up on top Craigslist

French Linen in a sophisticated color!  To me it rivals a piece from Pottery Barn. It is a timeless & classic color. It is a taupe color with a bit of grey to it.  When compared to a similar Chalk Paint® color, Coco. I describe Coco as being more of a warmer color…a light brown. Almost like a latte color.   But French Linen is a slight cool color and it can appear grey in photos.  For kitchen cabinets – depending on your counter tops – I love painting French Linen on the base and Old White on the upper cabinets!

If you want to read a post comparing French Linen to other “greys” in Annie’s suite, click HERE.

French Linen with both Clear and Dark Wax Sample Board

PREP:
Janene just used some water, but The Purple Painted Lady always recommends cleaning your piece using some Mineral Spirits and then doing, a clean water rinse.  Janene also likes to take all the drawers out of their cavities and then vacuum inside the body and the drawers of the piece.  She said she has found way too many spiders inside old pieces of furniture.

Janene Buchler The Purple Painted Lady BEFORE Old White French Linen

BLEED THRU / SHELLAC:
Janene began painting, but because the piece is Mahogany, she had a little bleed through that was only on the corners of the piece and the corners of each of the drawers.  She easily remedied that by applying a coat of Zinsser Bullseye Shellac over the entire dresser.  She already painted a coat of paint, but that is okay, since the shellac can go straight over the Chalk Paint®.  To read more about Shellac, click HERE.

JANENE’S PAINTING TIP:
I use painters tape anywhere I don’t want paint to get.   i.e. around the drawers any clean lines I want to create. Then I start painting the drawers then the body and then do a second coat on the drawers then body, then I lightly sand with a fine grit sanding block, wipe down the piece, then I (apply clear) wax.BRUSHES USED:
I use Annie Sloan paint brushes for painting.  Click HERE to see brush options.
Annies Brushes

WAX BRUSH USED BY JANENE:
I use the ultimate waxing brush for waxing.  I like the flat head of the brush better for waxing then the Annie Sloan waxing brush.  When I wax I found that going in one direction/section at a time then wipe with a lint free rag gives you a smoother consistent finished look.  I remove all of the residual wax with a lint free rag immediately after applying the wax)
Ultimate Wax Brush ruler The Purple Painted Lady

BUFFING:
I also leave the piece to sit for 24 or more hours then use the buffing brush to give it more shine.

Buffing Brush in my hand large

AMOUNT OF PAINT USED ON THIS PROJECT:

The amount of paint I used for this project was about 1/4 maybe a little less of a quart of Old White and very little of the French Linen.

MAKE IT SPECIAL!:

Janene also likes to make her pieces unique and always goes that extra mile.  For example- she lines her drawers with fabric. She lines the drawer after painting them but before she applies wax to them.  She uses adhesive spray to attached the fabric and a utility knife to cut the fabric overhang.

Janene Buchler Lined drawers The Purple Painted Lady

HARDWARE:
The hardware on the piece was original and was dirty and gold so I cleaned the hardware with a vinegar bath then I spray painted them metallic black then a light coat of metallic pearl. Once dry they are the last thing I put on the piece.

Janene Buchler Close up Drawer The Purple Painted Lady

Personally, I think Janene did a fantastic job!!!!!
