Can I paint over Chalk Paint® later if I change my mind about the color?

A Chalk Paint® question I am often asked is……..

Can I paint over Chalk Paint® later if I change my mind about the color?YES! …..But the steps to do so may vary depending on two things:
1. Have you waxed your piece?
AND
2. What product you are using to paint over your piece?

1.) Did you apply WAX?

IF NO wax has been applied over the Chalk Paint®- then this is super easy! Go ahead and paint over the Chalk Paint® with EITHER Chalk Paint® OR any other product you choose. It will be just fine! Chalk Paint® makes an excellent base for all products.

If YES- you have applied wax to your piece- and you plan on using Chalk Paint® to repaint your piece, then:

A. PAINTING WITH CHALK PAINT AGAIN? If the wax feels dry- no matter if it is has only been 15 minutes since the last wax application or a day or two- GO ahead and paint right over it with Chalk Paint®. If the wax feels really thick and tacky- then I would consider removing some based on directions below. Annie’s products were created to work perfectly with each other.

B. If the wax is fresh – then you will want to use a little mineral spirits on a rag. Your rag should be slightly damp- NOT dripping wet. Be careful if doing this inside your home because you do not want Mineral Spirits dripping on your brand new wood floor. (well, you might not have a brand new floor, but you understand what I mean, right?)

C. PAINTING WITH LATEX? You will need to remove the wax since neither latex paint or primer will stick permanetely to the wax.

So- place a drop cloth down if necessary. Using your rag that is moist with mineral spirits- wipe your piece in the same direction you painted it from edge to edge. Move across the cabinet, dresser, etc and do not aggressively focus on one spot. This process will take about 5 or 10 minutes to do your whole piece. You will need to have a few rags for this. The result you will be left with …..is that your Chalk Paint® will feel like it did prior to waxing. Sort of a flat, matte surface. Use your hand and glide it over the surface. By the feel of it- you should have a good idea- if you removed it all or at least most of it (which is ok too!)

Once done with removing the wax …….¸¸.•*¨¨*• …go ahead and paint with EITHER Chalk Paint® or any other paint product you choose.

Shellac- It Has A Shelf Life

If you have read my post about when to use Shellac- you know that it is a life saver and has so many uses like when you are having painting issues with:

You used wood filler on a section and the paint is taking to it differently?

Every once in a great while- I will receive an email from someone who is saying that their shellac is not working.

Shellac is produced from natural materials. Which means – shellac is also perishable. Perishable- in the sense it has a shelf life, an expiration date…in other words…it is no longer good after a certain date – so don’t use it. Sort of like spoiled milk…eew!

Cans of shellac are often marked with their date of manufacture. Now here is the interesting thing that most do not realize- Shellac typically expires 6 to 9 months after the date of manufacturer. So when buying shellac, if you go to a store and you find some in the way back of the shelf covered with dust…you may not want to purchase it.

When Shellac passes its shelf life date it begins to undergo a chemical change and it will gradually take longer to dry, and the dried film is softer and more prone to scratches and water damage and poor performance. Meaning- it is not ideal to use.

Zinsser, the brand that I like to use and commonly stocked in big box stores throughout North America, uses a date code.

DECODING THE STAMP ON TOP OF THE CAN:

For example, my can is marked on the lid with the code S42279 D.

The first number after the letter is the last digit in the year it was manufactured.
The second number corresponds to the month.
The third and fourth numbers relate to the actual day of the month.

So, my can of shellac shown above was manufactured on February 27, 2014.

Zinsser’s Bulls Eye Shellac is the only pre-mixed shellac in the world guaranteed to dry quickly to a hard, durable finish for 3 years after the date of manufacture. We love it and use it often when doing kitchen cabinet jobs.

However, since storage conditions can greatly affect the shelf life of shellac always check the manufacturing date to find the freshest Bulls Eye Shellac and apply some of the product to a test surface to check the dry time and film hardness.

HOW TO STORE SHELLAC:

To ensure a long life for your shellac, keep the container tightly closed and store in a cool, dry place where the temperature does not exceed 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Extreme heat can ruin shellac in less than a week. Unlike paint…..there is no need to worry about cold weather; since shellac is alcohol-based it is unaffected by freezing temperatures.

Memorial Day 2014 (Shop Schedule)

Happy Memorial Day Everyone.

For many- it is a day off. For me personally- I work 6 days a week- every week- but Sundays and Holidays are sacred to me. If I was to be brutally honest though- I guess what helps me to actually sit back and relax- is that neither UPS or Federal Express work those days. Striking a balance in life- is something I struggle with- always have.

This weekend I reflect on all of those men and women who made the greatest sacrifice of all- their lives. There have been various “Memorial Day’s” established throughout the last couple hundred years, but on May 26, 1966, President Johnson signed a presidential proclamation naming Waterloo, New York, as the birthplace of Memorial Day.

I live about an hour away- and I think we may go and visit the festivities happening there. On Memorial Day- I plan to visit my father’s grave and place flowers and a flag there for him. He served in the Korean War on a ship called the USS Perry.

If you order paint on-line, it can be a bit intimidating since colors may look differently on your monitor (especially depending on the quality of it.)

When it comes to Annie’s “reds” – I think there is enough of a contrast that it is pretty easy to understand and see the difference of them on-line. And typically – the photos you see are true representations of the color. But still- depending on the amount of light shining on a piece when a photo was taken – or filters used on a lens, it will influence how the color appears. So, when purchasing paint on-line- always look at a few examples of it (just google the color name) and also, feel free to contact The Purple Painted Lady and ask questions prior to buying.

DESCRIPTION OF EMPEROR’S SILK:
With that said- today we are featuring Emperor’s Silk! This is a bright red! Similar to the color of a Coca Cola can. Annie likes to say this bright pure red is like the red silk lining of a jacket, because of the way it looks. We love it used as an interior of a cupboard or drawer. It is the red -almost like a summer ripened tomato. Absolutely stunning. Add dark wax and you have a jaw dropping piece!

Since it is a primary color- it is a wonderful addition to your “painting pantry” because of all you can create when mixing it with other Chalk Paint® colors:

Coral color: Mix equal amounts of Pure White & Emperor’s Silk and half amount of Scandinavian Pink for a pretty pink. Then to achieve coral add equal amounts of Barcelona Orange.

Baby Pink color: Mix a few drops of Emperor’s Silk into Old White or Pure White

Berry color: Equal amounts Emperor’s Silk and Emile

Dark Purple color: Mix equal amounts of Emperor’s Silk with Napoleonic Blue

It is a great red if painting a Union Jack too!

Now- another Chalk Paint® “red” color is Burgundy!

In October, 2014, Annie Sloan introduced this color to her palette of Chalk Paint® ~ …..it is …..Burgundy.

The Purple Painted Lady has found Burgundy to be interesting, in that the color appears to be like a bright berry color when wet, but once dry, it deepens and is a significantly richer color. Check out the difference between the paint stick and the paint lid shown above.

We love this paired with both the clear and dark wax, but using dark wax deepens the color even more.

The images below shows it sandwiched between Emperor’s Silk and Primer Red as to understand the difference between them. Annie Sloan defines this color as a rich deep warm red the color of dark cherries. Most of Annie’s colors are 18th and 20th century inspired but this one comes from the 19th century when the discovery of Alizarin Crimson made this color possible for the first time to a large number of people.

Burgundy is a wonderful color to try mixing with others you may already have. Make a deep purple by mixing Burgundy with Napoleonic Blue Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan. On the left of the image, can you see how the Burgundy dries darker and deeper compared to when it is wet?

What about Duck Egg Blue Chalk Paint®?! Is it a blue or is it a green?

I guess you can say the answer to the question is, yes to both! It is a soft greenish blue.

The other day I wrote a little feature about Annie Sloan’s “Blue” Chalk Paint colors. I included Napoleonic Blue, Aubusson Blue, Louis Blue and even Old Violet. (You can read about it HERE) However, I left out the color Duck Egg Blue and boy, oh boy …. many of you were disappointed, to say the least! But that is because Duck Egg deserves a post all to itself! So…here it is!

First, I must share with you that I am one of the biggest fans of Duck Egg Blue. In fact- I have to consciously remind myself to not paint everything with this color because I love it that much!

Duck Egg Blue is very easy on the eyes, and plays well with so many existing colors you may have in a room already. Not to mention that it has amazing color “stain blocking” coverage! I wrote a post a couple years ago on how I used it over a dining table that had a huge burn mark on it. (Just have to add, that I got the table free) When I applied the first coat of Duck Egg Blue – it covered the entire burn mark. No bleeding or show through after one solid coat of Duck Egg. It was very impressive. And at that moment, I learned how Duck Egg Blue was much more than “just a pretty face” of a color!

So, yes….Duck Egg Blue is a beautiful color! All of Annie’s colors are, but this one is even more special.

DESCRIPTION:

It has the ability to complement many different interiors and colors. It is a greenish soft blue. Annie says it is reminiscent of Rococo French and Swedish interiors. It looks wonderful and fresh with Old White. We also love it distressed when it is used over Chateau Grey. When you apply dark wax over it- it tones down the any of the blue hue there- and brings out more of the sage/green in it. It is “a must have” add to your suite of colors if you love French Country. Pair it with Arles, add some Dark Wax and you have a killer combination! Or, partner Duck Egg Blue with any of Annie’s reds and be prepared to be blown away! For example, check out the sample board below with Duck Egg Blue over the Chalk Paint® color called Primer Red. This piece has a dark wax glaze added, which tones down the Duck Egg Blue.

So, why did I not include it in my post about Annie Sloan’s “blues?”

At my shop, I have pieces of 15 inch long crown molding painted in each of the Chalk Paint® colors. Customers can hold the sample boards, move them around next to other colors to see how they look and pair, they also can take them outside to see the color in natural sunlight versus just the overhead lights in my shop. This way they can see the true color and the difference of how it looks pending on lighting. I love how these sample boards all look spread across an old Hoosier cabinet base. And I think they are a wonderful way for my customers to really get a good feeling of what the color truly is.

In this sample board spectrum, I have “Duck Egg Blue” paired near the “greens.” It just seems to blend better near the Olive, Chateau Grey and Versailles colors to its left and Provence and Florence to its right.
