Spraying Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan with a Paint Sprayer

INTERESTED IN USING A SPRAYER FOR YOUR CHALK PAINT® in Liters?: Seriously- if you are planning on painting your kitchen cabinets and are looking to get a smoother finish- using a sprayer is a great option. Or, painting furniture but especially wicker or dining room chairs and again, you want a smooth finish – this sprayer is a total game changer and will expedite the process!

And we have the Wagner Home Decor Paint Sprayer for sale HERE.

The Purple Painted Lady likes to use the Wagner Home Decor Paint Sprayer. We retail it for $90. A cool feature that makes this accessible for anyone, is that you do not need an air compressor and this little tool is the bomb! The learning curve is not bad and it is really super easy to use.

Before using the sprayer – make sure to thoroughly clean your cabinet doors. We like to wipe the cabinet surfaces down using Krud Kutter and a paper towel or a Scotchbrite Scrubbie. After cleaning the door, use a fine mist spray bottle and spray the surface with fresh water and wipe away any residual cleaner with a rag or paper towel.

Once the surfaces have been cleaned and you have given them enough time to thoroughly dry, then you can begin painting. This is the fun part!

If painting cabinets, I like to remove the doors from the cabinet and also – remove the hardware. Put the hardware from each door into its own plastic baggie and label it so you know door which they coincide with.

  1. Prepare your surface you want to paint by cleaning as described above.
  2. Prepare your paint for the sprayer by warming the paint can in a hot bath – literally while the paint container. This actually helps a lot. See our photo immediately below. Fill the container with super hot water and then place the container in it but make sure that the water level stays at least an inch below the top of the can.
  3. Next, pour some paint into the Wagner container – it is important to thin your paint with very, very warm water or use paint extender will also work.

AGAIN- you should use very – very warm water for both the bath and thinning your paint!

So, pour some the paint in to the pot of your spray gun….. but do not fill more than 50% because you still need add to water and/or XIM. There is not a set recipe ….most will be around adding about 10% to 20%.  (start with the less water, because you can always add more paint if you add too much water, but try not to waste your paint!)

You know you have the right consistency when the “worm casts” fall from a stir stick and just blend in to the paint versus leaving textured ribbon on top. What are “worm cast?” Think about when you have cake batter and it is thick. If you pick up your spoon and the batter that drizzles off, sits on top of the batter ….that ribbon of batter is a worm cast. You know you have the right mix of paint to XIM or water when you do not have worm casts. You must make sure also- the consistency is the same all through out the pot so mix it well! The tricky part is NOT making it too thin- so experiment with less paint to not waste it in the beginning.

4. Having your work space and the cabinet doors (or whatever it is you are painting) heated to about 70 degrees is important. Work in a reasonably warm space.  And this is not while you are just in it painting. Meaning- you heat your garage while you are working in it and then – turn the heat off when you are done but leave your painted piece and sprayer there.  The space should be kept at this temperature consistently prior and for the entire cure time!

5. We suggest playing around with the sprayer’s spray pattern settings.  We like to go back and forth horizontally. If painting cabinet doors, we will paint all four sides of the door, then do the flat top surface.

6. Start with a Test spray on a wall. Hang a drop cloth up or use large sections of cardboard.

7. Begin painting with super thin coats. We will actually apply 5 or 6 coats of paint with the sprayer overall, but keep in mind- we build the coverage up gently. Each application is super fast and again- is applied thin.

8. The paint will self level quite a bit! You will be surprised at how it does this. But if you apply it too heavy- you can get an orange peel look. Give each application ample time to thoroughly dry. I would suggest to be safe- wait an hour between coats.

8. Start with a Test spray on a wall. Hang a drop cloth up or use large sections of cardboard.

9. Hold the gun anywhere from 6 to 12 inches from your surface.  (Play with this distance based on your sprayer)

10. Once you begin spraying your cabinets, get a line of paint sprayed down and then start your second row and cover the previous about 50% to have a uniform outcome.

In the video below we are using Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan in the color named Original. It is Annie’s warmest “white.”

11. The paint will look a little stipply.  But since it has been thinned- it will settle and smooth out.  After about an hour or two (if you are in a damp area time may take longer)….you can apply a second coat.

12. Finish your cabinets by sealing them with Annie’s Clear Wax or Lacquer. (by the way, Lacquer can be sprayed too!)

Additional IMPORTANT Sprayer Information for Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan:

Experiment to get the right results when spraying with your particular model. The most important thing to know is that there is no ‘magic’ ratio of paint to water and you will need to tweak it every time you spray, as site specific conditions mean that results can vary.  With that said, Annie Sloan Interiors recommends that you add 10% to 20% warm water as a starting point.

ADDING A PAINT EXTENDER OR WATER:

An extender will thin your paint and by adding it, it will assist to get a smooth finish.  The Purple Painted Lady reached out to Annie Sloan Interiors and they shared that they have used XIM Latex Extender with good results in the past.  Don’t let the name
XIM Latex Extender fool you – since the word “Latex” is noted. Although there is no Latex in Chalk Paint®- this product is meant to work with any water based paints and Chalk Paint® is water based.   The container in the picture below is the brand Annie Sloan Interiors referred us to use, but others are available. Their spray consultant guys tell them that the main ingredient of these extenders is propylene glycol and that you can effectively make your own extender using this ingredient.  Personally, I would just suggest purchasing the product pre-packaged and ready to go.

Even though you have added water as stated in the previous step – you still dilute with water AND add the extender – if you find it’s too thin to spray you can always add more paint. Don’t get too hung up on the amounts – the spray guys we work with just eyeball it!   Using an airless sprayer is not recommended – the high solids content in Chalk Paint® will damage the nozzle.  You will want to warm your Chalk Paint® because it will spray and settle better.  Place your container of paint in a bain marie of very hot water for 15 minutes.  Bain Marie is a container holding hot water into which a pan is placed for slow warming. After 15 minutes, When we have taught this in workshops in the past, we used a large crockpot as a bain marie. It doesn’t really matter how much water is in there just make sure it is not too high that when you set your containers in- that the water overflows into your paint!

CONNECTING THE AIR COMPRESSOR TO THE SPRAY GUN and TIP ORIENTATION:

When connecting the air compressor tube to your spray gun, make sure tube from the air compressor bows in a direction that makes sense. So, if you are right handed – have it bow away from your hand. The hose should not be bowed down toward the ground.down. Also, make sure the tip of your spray gun is in the right setting. You want your paint to come out spraying wide versus condensed. Think about using a garden hose and water flowers. You spray them versus having the water come out in a solid, florcefull stream.

Annie Sloan’s 750 mL Lacquer that is both for Interior and Exterior Projects

The photo above is not an optical illusion. The containers shown are side by side, but the container on the left, is Annie’s Gloss Lacquer that is packaged in the 750 mL tins. The container on the right, is Annie’s Lacquer that was packaged in the 1000 mL and can only be used inside. The 750 mL Lacquers can be used both inside and out!

The 1000 mL container will be phased out through 2019. Besides the obvious packaging difference above, something to point is that in May of 2019, Annie Sloan introduced a new sheen- that being her Gloss Lacquer since in the past, only a matt was available.

In May of 2019, Annie’s also introduced her Matt Lacquer in new packaging of the 750 mL container.

The very exciting quality of both the 750 mL containers of  Gloss Lacquer and Matt Lacquer, is that can both be used for interior and exterior projects…. where as in the past, the Annie’s Lacquer that was packaged in the 1000 mL container was only for interior use. Annie’s Lacquer packaged in the 750 mL containers also has UV Protection so it will help minimize the fading of bright colors from the hot sun.

IF USING LACQUER OVER A DARK COLOR PAINT?  =>    KEEP IN MIND…..as with any matte finish product, it is recommended that you use a gloss finish first , then apply the matte when going over darker colors. The flattening agents in the product that give it a matte finish will show as a cloudy look over dark colors. You have to cover with a gloss first. Annie Sloan Lacquer in the 750 mL containers comes in both a GLOSS and MATT.

Something to keep in mind- is that applying Lacquer is not like applying paint! It does not like to be over handled. If you click HERE it will link you to a detailed post that we wrote with detailed instructions and tips on how to best use Annie’s Lacquer.

Also, as noted in the spec sheet below, be careful when applying the Matte Lacquer over “dark” colored colors! You do not want too many coats or for it to be too thick because it can cause white hazing.

DIFFERENCES IN THE 750mL vs 1000mL Lacquer Container:

  • the coverage per square foot has increased. The 750mL containers will cover approximately 200 sq ft the 1000ml was specified to cover 100 sq ft. (I know what you are thinking, less Lacquer but more coverage…but that is correct)
  • the 750mL can be used on BOTH inside and outside painting projects
  • there is a UV protector
  • it is certified “Toy Safe”
  • Gloss is now available as a sheen

If applying over a surface with multiple colors, like if you created a floor cloth as shown below – use a light touch or light pressure with your brush. You do not want to over brush. In fact- you could use a foam roller and then, lightly brush it out. If you apply too much pressure, you can run the risk of pulling paint.

Remember- you cannot apply Lacquer over Annie’s wax!

(It does not matter the color of the wax either) Wax is an organic material, your Lacquer will eventually peel off.  It may not right away, but trust me- it will eventually.

ADDITIONAL NOTES (like you haven’t read enough already though!) But this is very important!!!!!

Firstly, I will come straight out and say this – it takes a bit of extra effort to get a good finish with matte top coats over dark colour paints like Athenian Black, Graphite, Napoleonic Blue or Amsterdam Green.    Lacquer does not behave in the same way as paint!

The reason why I say ‘matte top coats’ and not specifically Annie Sloan Matt Lacquer is that it’s important to note that this is the case with any of these types of product (matt finish polyacrylic). During our product development we found that most existing matt topcoats on the market include a caveat in their technical data sheets to this effect.

However, we believe that the finish and results that are possible with Matt Lacquer mean that it is still a product that is worthy of a place in the Annie Sloan inventory. So here’s some great tips you should really follow.

Annie Sloan Matt Lacquer gives a very flat finish. To create this effect, it contains a flattening agent to disperse reflected light and cut out the sheen. When applied over dark colours, this flattening agent becomes visible, giving a milky or cloudy effect. The more coats that are applied, the more pronounced this effect becomes.

The effect is also more obvious if the Matt Lacquer is applied to textured surfaces, as it can gather more thickly in the texture and brush strokes of the finish. There’s a couple of tips to get around this.

TIP 1 – FOR WORKING WITH MATT OVER DARK COLOURS: Sand your paint back to a super smooth finish before you apply the first coat of Lacquer. Eliminating brush marks and texture will prevent a build up of flattening agents. This is a good tip if you are only intending to apply ONE coat of Lacquer, for items that do not require the additional protection of a second coat. Dilute your Lacquer coat with 10% water and apply with a light hand.

TIP 2 – FOR WORKING WITH MATT OVER DARK COLOURS: Apply a coat of Gloss Lacquer as your first coat. This is a good tip for items that require extra protection or where you don’t want to take the extra step of sanding the paint smooth. The Gloss Lacquer will fill in any texture and brush marks in the paint, giving a smoother finish to work on. Dilute this first gloss coat with 10% water. Once dry, finish with a carefully applied coat of Matt.

TIP 3 – FOR WORKING WITH ANY LACQUER: Always test for bleed through by applying paint and Lacquer in an inconspicuous (if possible) area. Don’t skip this step! Always test! It’s the only way you can be sure of what the finished results will be. It’s much easier and less frustrating to solve potential problems at this stage. Bleed through can manifest in lots of different ways, and can even affect dark colours.

Edited to add – TIP 4 – Experiment with spraying, which is another application option. If you’re interested in this, there’s a lot of info out there if you research spraying polyacrylic. We use a HVLP sprayer and thin slightly with water. Since sprayers will vary from brand to brand, it is difficult to give more specifics and part of using it in your sprayer and with you nozzles- will be trial and error.

I hope this helps! It’s important to understand that this product is not necessarily the ‘easy option’ over wax, so bear this in mind when consulting with your customers over their choice of finish.

Lacquer can be applied over gold or silver leaf also.

CAN I RETURN OR EXCHANGE THIS PRODUCT?

Florence over Barcelona Orange Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.

I saw this photo in a magazine and completely fell in love with the color combination. I know I wrote a post about this in the past, for the life of me- I cannot find it on my website. And since I just a call from a local customer asking about it- I thought I would repost it quickly!

What makes this piece so pretty is the color combination. First, the piece was painted in Barcelona Orange Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.

After one or two solid coats of the Barcelona Orange Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan , I would recommend applying an application of Annie’s Clear Chalk Paint Wax. You want to put the wax on and then, immediately remove the excess. I like to use a wax brush and feel that it gives you a better application, but if you are on a budget or plan on only doing one project, use some Scott Shop Towels or lint free rags instead.

After you have applied the wax, I would wait till the following day and apply a coat (or two) of Florence Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan. Florence is a beautiful color! According to Annie, Florence was ” inspired by the colors of the copper green mineral and semi-precious stone, malachite, and from the same family of stones as azurite and turquoise. In the 17th and 18th century it was used as a color made with verdigris but as it is a very fugitive color turning black with time so we are not aware of how it was used on woodwork in many houses. It is a classical color found in classical Italian furniture.”

After you have one or two thorough coats of the Florence Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan then take a lightly moisten wash cloth or baby wipe and squeeze to remove ALL EXCESS moisture! You do not want any water dripping down your piece. Use the moisten towel like you would sandpaper. Gently rub the surface in the direction you want to “distress.” Keep in mind, distressing is usually heaviest in the corner and lighter as you move away. Below is a close up of a buffet that I did this technique on.

Once you have it looking the way you want, then- seal it again using a coat or two of Annie’s Clear Chalk Paint Wax.

I hope you give this combination a try. It is really pretty when you have detail to show off.

Creating a Darker Navy with Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan

Annie Sloan says, “Napoleonic Blue Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan is inspired by the ultramarine and cobalt blue pigments used for decorative work in everything from neoclassical interiors through to modern 20th century decoration.”

I feel it is a cone flower blue….almost with hints of Periwinkle to it!  I recall when we described it as a deep true blue that is the color of fresh picked blueberries- perfect for creating the Union Jack flag!

By itself as is, it is not navy that is all the rage to do your cabinetry in. So, we played around with a few recipes mixing Graphite Chalk Paint® into it, and that did the trick!
Graphite Chalk Paint® is a warm black and works perfectly..

One option to create a navy, is to mix 4 parts of Napoleonic Blue Chalk Paint® to 1 part Graphite Chalk Paint® . (colors noted for this recipe are from litre packaging)

When we say “part” we are referring to any unit of measure you require. So, you can mix eye drops, tablespoons, cups or quarts – just keep it consistent. . We really try our best to carefully pack any item that is ordered online but want to do our part with helping this beautiful planet we live on. It is the least we can do for our earth and all who currently live here and for all future generations. With that said, please reuse or recycle your cardboard boxes.

Thank you for being part of our tribe!
