Using Chalk Paint® on Open Cane Webbing

Lookie, lookie at this settee with open cane webbing that our customer Angela Giancarlo painted using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® in the color Coco and Annie’s Dark Wax.

As you can see from the “before” picture below, Angela purchased the settee new.

DESCRIPTION OF COLOR USED:

Coco is the sophisticated side of neutral. It is more like a latte…very similar to Annie’s color French Linen. But Coco is more brown or chocolatey versus French Linen – who has a bit of grey. I love Coco paired with Old White and Antoinette. Yum…makes me think of Neapolitan ice cream!

PREP:
Angela wrote, “Thus, neither the cane nor the wood was treated.  Before painting, I wiped the settee with a clean rag dampened with “Life O’Wood,” which is a wonderful product that has been manufactured in Buffalo, NY since 1914.  (I use Life O’Wood on everything I paint both before painting and afterward for regular dusting.)”    *****  DISCLAIMER: The Purple Painted Lady has never used this product called “Life O’Wood”  – but is in the process to try it.  So, stay tuned on our review of it!

In general~  The Purple Painted Lady typically recommends cleaning your piece using a rag lightly moistened with Mineral Spirits and then doing, a clean water rinse afterward.

ANGELA’S PROCESS:
Angela selected the fabric first (Robert Allen, “Raised Velvet” in “Ivory”) and then chose her paint color.  Angela’s tip is that it is always easier to choose a paint color to match a fabric, versus the other way around.  From the fabric she fell in love with, she decided to use Annie Sloan “Coco” because she wanted a “chocolate-y tone.”  Angela was excited to also use Annie’s dark wax to give the piece depth and rich.

ANGELA’S PAINTING PROCESS OVER CANE & WOOD:
Angela undertook different painting processes for the cane and the wood (since she knew the cane could have an issue with paint dripping otherwise.).

Angela painted the cane first.  She used a 1 1/2″ Purdy adjutant brush.
Purdy Boarder
She painted slowly and in sections ~ small area-by-small area.  Cane is tricky — gloppy paint dripping through would make a real mess and likely ruin the piece.  Also, Angela added water to the Coco paint to thin it out.  She would guess she used a 3-1 ratio of paint to water. She applied three coats to the cane and forced herself to work slowly(!), which she said was really hard for her.

Next, she painted the wood trim using the small Annie Sloan domed top paint brush and applying two coats of Coco.

The Purple Painted Lady recommends a dry brushed technique for painting open cane webbing.  You will need to do a few coats of paint to build up your color, but you will not get any drips at all!

DARK WAX MADE INTO A GLAZE WITH MINERAL SPIRITS:

The images below are Dark Wax being applied right out of the tn over a dresser that The Purple Painted Lady painted in Coco.
Applying the Dark Wax to CoCoCoCo dresser with Dark Wax and email

As for waxing, Angela did not wax the cane — the thought of “glopping up” the cane was too scary for her! (and The purple Painted Lady totally agreed with her choice.)

Also, knowing that the settee is not a piece that will be used on a daily basis gave her greater comfort in her decision to skip the wax on the cane.  (BUT keep in mind- Chalk Paint® is an extremely durable paint.  It can be used for exterior use without a top coat!)

For the wood, Angela chose to skip the clear wax, and go straight to the dark wax because she wanted a chocolate-y color.

CREATING A GLAZE WITH DARK WAX:
She took the dark wax and created a glaze by combining equal parts of Annie Sloan Dark Wax and Mineral Spirits, following The Purple Painted Lady’s recipe!

She applied the glaze section-by-section using a waxing brush.

And then there is

For each section, I left the glaze on for about 20-30 minutes before wiping off with your totally awesome rags that are called “Better Than Cheesecloth.”

Painting over Mahogany by Janene Buchler

Lookie, lookie at what our customer Janene Buchler painted using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® in the colors Old White and French Linen!

Janene Buchler The Purple Painted Lady AFTER Old White French Linen picmonkey

It is a 1950’s shield mirror dresser that she painted using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® in the colors Old White and French Linen.

DESCRIPTION OF COLORS USED:

Old White is more of a soft cream color.  There is the slightest hue of yellow in it. This “top hat” dresser below shows the color nicely.  It does play well with almost every other color in Annie’s suite.  But in case you want to read a post that describes Annie’s other “whites” and light colors comparing them to Old White, click HERE.

Old White dresser close up on top Craigslist

French Linen in a sophisticated color!  To me it rivals a piece from Pottery Barn. It is a timeless & classic color. It is a taupe color with a bit of grey to it.  When compared to a similar Chalk Paint® color, Coco. I describe Coco as being more of a warmer color…a light brown. Almost like a latte color.   But French Linen is a slight cool color and it can appear grey in photos.  For kitchen cabinets – depending on your counter tops – I love painting French Linen on the base and Old White on the upper cabinets!

If you want to read a post comparing French Linen to other “greys” in Annie’s suite, click HERE.

PREP:
Janene just used some water, but The Purple Painted Lady always recommends cleaning your piece using some Mineral Spirits and then doing, a clean water rinse.  Janene also likes to take all the drawers out of their cavities and then vacuum inside the body and the drawers of the piece.  She said she has found way too many spiders inside old pieces of furniture.

Janene Buchler The Purple Painted Lady BEFORE Old White French Linen

BLEED THRU / SHELLAC:
Janene began painting, but because the piece is Mahogany, she had a little bleed through that was only on the corners of the piece and the corners of each of the drawers.  She easily remedied that by applying a coat of Zinsser Bullseye Shellac over the entire dresser.  She already painted a coat of paint, but that is okay, since the shellac can go straight over the Chalk Paint®.  To read more about Shellac, click HERE.

JANENE’S PAINTING TIP:
I use painters tape anywhere I don’t want paint to get.   i.e. around the drawers any clean lines I want to create. Then I start painting the drawers then the body and then do a second coat on the drawers then body, then I lightly sand with a fine grit sanding block, wipe down the piece, then I (apply clear) wax.BRUSHES USED:
I use Annie Sloan paint brushes for painting.  Click HERE to see brush options.
Annies Brushes

WAX BRUSH USED BY JANENE:
I use the ultimate waxing brush for waxing.  I like the flat head of the brush better for waxing then the Annie Sloan waxing brush.  When I wax I found that going in one direction/section at a time then wipe with a lint free rag gives you a smoother consistent finished look.  I remove all of the residual wax with a lint free rag immediately after applying the wax)

BUFFING:
I also leave the piece to sit for 24 or more hours then use the buffing brush to give it more shine.

Buffing Brush in my hand large

AMOUNT OF PAINT USED ON THIS PROJECT:

The amount of paint I used for this project was about 1/4 maybe a little less of a quart of Old White and very little of the French Linen.

MAKE IT SPECIAL!:

Janene also likes to make her pieces unique and always goes that extra mile.  For example- she lines her drawers with fabric. She lines the drawer after painting them but before she applies wax to them.  She uses adhesive spray to attached the fabric and a utility knife to cut the fabric overhang.

Janene Buchler Lined drawers The Purple Painted Lady

HARDWARE:
The hardware on the piece was original and was dirty and gold so I cleaned the hardware with a vinegar bath then I spray painted them metallic black then a light coat of metallic pearl. Once dry they are the last thing I put on the piece.

Personally, I think Janene did a fantastic job!!!!!

Painting a Harlequin / Diamond Top Piece

One of the best parts of creating my business The Purple Painted Lady, is seeing the proud faces of customers who accomplished a furniture transformation using Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan and how they are excited to share their experience.

In western NY, the popularity of a harlequin, striped or diamond pattern is strong.  Some love a checkerboard too.  Either way- both require a little pre-thought, planning and layout.  I hope this post helps you if you are interested in trying a whimsical design.  Below are a few photos of some pieces I did years ago.

And here is a lay out shown by Karen Meadows.

Karen is an artist and lives in Maine. She wrote me the nicest email with some photos, and I thought I would share them with you regarding this piece she completed with a black and white harlequin top.

“HOW TO” INSTRUCTIONS FOR CREATING A HARLEQUIN TOP:

Karen used Graphite, Pure White and Provence on this piece.

*** On a side note-  HERE is a post that shows the difference between Provence and Duck Egg Blue Chalk Paint®.

She referenced our post with HERE that is all about HOW TO CREATE A DIAMOND PATTERN TOP.  It has detailed instructions on how to create this harlequin pattern also.

LETTER FROM KAREN:

I have recently turned my focus towards furniture and Annie Sloan paint and waxes from the Purple Painted Lady namely Trish!
The piece shown below was found in a garage sale. She said it was $20 and the challenge was on. Well… First challenge was to stuff said bureau into my beetle!

Karen Meadows pic

I cleaned it with a warm damp cloth. I fixed the drawer ‘ gliders and I was on my way. There is a picture when the Harlequin design penciled on and painters tape on the diamonds that I won’t paint. The easiest way I have found to paint a Harlequin design is to mark a large X from corners to corners. Then just draw lines parallel to those original lines, remembering the smaller the space between your parallel lines the smaller your diamonds. These diamonds are made with 3 inch spread.

Karen Meadows Harlequin The Purple Painted Lady 3 Layout grid pic

At this point I have already remove the drawers and apply two coats of old white to the entire Bureau. The diamonds are painted with Annie Sloan old white and graphite. There are two coats. I found a small flat angled brush works best.

On the side I use painters tape for the stripes. The teal color is the Annie Sloan Provence. I love it!

On the hardware I used my dry stencil brush with a tiny bit of old white. Thank you for looking. I hope you enjoyed it as much as the new owner of the piece. XO Karen

Color Mixing with Chalk Paint®

One of our Facebook friends, Suzi Mitchell wrote us saying she has the Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan colors of English Yellow and Louis Blue.

Sample Board The Purple Painted Lady Chalk Paint English YellowLouis Blue Sample - Copy

Suzi asked if mixing them could achieve Duck Egg.

Duck Egg Blue Sample Board Annie Sloan Chalk Paint The Purple Painted Lady

So, we did a little finger painting here for her. We did heavier on the Louis Blue…I am guessing maybe a 4:1 ratio and we achieved a color that is similar. It is definitely NOT an exact match…actually there more of a lighter blue hue to it….but yet, it is similar.

English Yellow Duck Egg Louis Blue Recipe The Purple Painted Lady Chalk Paint recipe

After creating this combination for Suzi, I thought I would write a brief post encouraging you all to not be afraid to dab the tip of your pinkie into some of your left over paint, and mix a couple to see the outcome.

You will enjoy doing this and possibly find, a whole new color to use on a new project.

Have you tried our Paint Mixing Tool on our website? CLICK HERE TO SEE IT!

It is a fun way to play with color mixing if unsure where to start. This tool is not an accurate, exact representation of an outcome- but mathematically it is pretty darn close. Note that your monitor quality does play into that equation. And just remember though- nothing compares to working with your local stockist and playing with real Chalk Paint®. With all that said…I hope you have fun using this Paint Mixer!

More Typography or Image Transfer FYI

I love inspirational quotes on pieces of furniture.  Especially, in a kid’s room or a front vestibule.  Making a statement seems, …cool to me.

The most recent quote I am painting is “Life Moves Pretty Fast. If you don’t stop & look around once in a while, you could miss it!”  Are you a “Ferris Bueller” fan- because if yes- you know this quote and you may want to – click here.

A couple weeks ago- I painted this “Love” dresser.  The shot below shows it almost dine.  There was still a little bit of painting left on it…..

Typography LOVE quote The purple Painted Lady Chalk Paint annie sloan dresser

When it comes to typography on painted pieces, it is very popular!

The dresser below is still in the works.  First we painted the dresser with Graphite Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.  Graphite is reminiscent of Gun Metal.  It is a soft charcoal black – which I like to compare to a dark slate color or a vintage slate chalk board in an old school room! It is made with purplish blues, browns, and it is not completely black.

Graphite is a popular color, especially when I am detailing a piece with vintage typography. I receive a lot of emails about this color. But again– I want to clearly state again though – this is NOT black.

The Purple Painted Lady Graphite Chalk Paint open lid

Once my dresser was painted and dried- I then followed the steps I have noted in another post here on my website.  So, in case you are interested in trying this yourself- check out an old post I wrote called “Typography! How does she do it?”

CLICK HERE TO READ THE POST ON STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS

The main thing is that Chalk Paint® is ideal for this technique.

As you will read- I like to use a projector and push an image up on to my dresser.

Using a water color pencil in the color I plan on using to fill in the design- I copy the design onto my piece.

Typography Life Moves Fast quote The purple Painted Lady Chalk Paint annie sloan dresser

In the photo I have here- I used a white water color pencil.

I will typically take the drawers out to paint the design, and then- using sandpaper- I distress my painted letters.

This will create a super smooth finish. Note the white dust on the Graphite paint on the upper drawers from sanding over the white letters.

Do not worry about that because once I go over this with my Annie Sloan Clear Wax- the residual dust will disappear.

Stay tuned and we will post soon showing the results using Annie’s Clear Wax over this piece.
