Dry Brushing Tips with Chalk Paint®

Dry Brushing is a technique where you off load most of the paint from your paint brush so there is minimal left.  So minimal, that after you apply the paint- it is almost dry already.  You are applying the paint very sparingly.  Often, I use a dry brush technique to achieve a specific look.

When I say “off load” basically it means you are wiping a lot of the paint off your brush…or taking your brush and painting on another surface with the goal to remove as much paint as possible off your bristles.

Here is an example of dry brushing Old White Chalk Paint® over a wood cabinet.

If you have come into our Macedon, NY location on a weekend, you have probably met Courtney.  She is part of the team at THE PURPLE PAINTED LADY™ and is super talented!  (Courtney is on the left in the photo below)

And if you have needed help with a project, she is extremely knowledgeable about the products we sell!  Also in the photo on the right, is Britni.  Britni is also part of our team and is also extremely helpful, caCourtney Britni Patio Umbrella The Purple Painted ladyring and product savvy!  I think of these two as “peas and carrots” as when you see one of them, the other is not far behind!  Sometimes I call them “Fric & Frac.”  They often work together and like to think of themselves as “The Purple Painted Lady Dream Team.”

Well, on December 26th, 2015, Courtney did a dry brush demo on an old cabinet at our Macedon store using Old White Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.

The Purple Painted Lady Old White Open Lid Quart Chalk Paint

Courtney was experimenting with this technique for the first time and I asked her to do a write up regarding some of the most important lessons she learned as to help others who are interested in trying this.

But first, here is the piece she completed with Britni modeling next to it.

Dry Brushing The Purple Painted Lady Old White Chalk Paint Annie Sloan

Courtney’s “How to Dry Brush” Tips:

1.) Use a brush with a flat edge or bristles cut in a straight line versus a round, domed top brush. The Purple Painted Lady Annie LARGE FLAT PAINT BRUSH

2. Have enough paint on your brush but not enough to paint a full solid line.

3.) Hold your brush more at an angle to get a better drag.

4.) Starting at the edge is good, but that will also be the area that receives the most paint…so, make sure to alternate the sides you start from! (For example- when doing the top of a cabinet or dresser- brush once starting from the left side, then next starting from the right side.)

5.) Work in linear sections so that your strokes look fluid.Dry Brush Technique Chalk Paint Courtney The purle Painted Lady 4

6.) It’s a good idea to have a damp cloth near you, that way you can blot your brush on the cloth, pick up some water and feather out the paint a bit easier.

7.) If the piece has architecture, alternate the sides you brush it from as so to have the paint laid from different directions.

8.) Paint inset panels first before painting the borders.

9.) For large surfaces, remember dry brush in the middle also to even out the appearance, versus just painting inward from the edges.

10.) Don’t be afraid to use sandpaper to soften strokes that may have been applied a little too heavy once paint is dry.

11.) Take drawers out before painting.Dry Brush The Purple Painted Lady close up

12.) Do not dip your brush into a cup of water to feather out the paint. Your brush will pick up too much water and create a wash which is a totally different look.

13.) Use a paper plate to pour some paint onto.  This is more important if using an older brush that may shed, since it is best that the stray bristles go into a plate or paper towel versus the quart of paint.

14.) Use a smaller Artisan brush to paint smaller ledges or hard to reach corners versus attempting to use a large paint brush.

15.) Dry brush WITH the grain of the wood.

Dry Brush Courtney The Purple Painted Lady Drawers

16.) As you drag the paint, lift up on the brush so it looks fluid and the stroke doesn’t stop abruptly.  Think of this as feathering out the end of the brush stroke.

17.  Lastly- always remember to take a photo of your piece “BEFORE” you start you painting project (unlike us, who forgot) and then share your photos on The Purple Painted Lady’s Facebook page HERE.

More Typography or Image Transfer FYI

I love inspirational quotes on pieces of furniture.  Especially, in a kid’s room or a front vestibule.  Making a statement seems, …cool to me.

The most recent quote I am painting is “Life Moves Pretty Fast. If you don’t stop & look around once in a while, you could miss it!”  Are you a “Ferris Bueller” fan- because if yes- you know this quote and you may want to – click here.

A couple weeks ago- I painted this “Love” dresser.  The shot below shows it almost dine.  There was still a little bit of painting left on it…..

Typography LOVE quote The purple Painted Lady Chalk Paint annie sloan dresser

When it comes to typography on painted pieces, it is very popular!

The dresser below is still in the works.  First we painted the dresser with Graphite Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.  Graphite is reminiscent of Gun Metal.  It is a soft charcoal black – which I like to compare to a dark slate color or a vintage slate chalk board in an old school room! It is made with purplish blues, browns, and it is not completely black.

Graphite is a popular color, especially when I am detailing a piece with vintage typography. I receive a lot of emails about this color. But again– I want to clearly state again though – this is NOT black.

The Purple Painted Lady Graphite Chalk Paint open lid

Once my dresser was painted and dried- I then followed the steps I have noted in another post here on my website.  So, in case you are interested in trying this yourself- check out an old post I wrote called “Typography! How does she do it?”

CLICK HERE TO READ THE POST ON STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS

The main thing is that Chalk Paint® is ideal for this technique.

As you will read- I like to use a projector and push an image up on to my dresser.

Using a water color pencil in the color I plan on using to fill in the design- I copy the design onto my piece.

Typography Life Moves Fast quote The purple Painted Lady Chalk Paint annie sloan dresser

In the photo I have here- I used a white water color pencil.

I will typically take the drawers out to paint the design, and then- using sandpaper- I distress my painted letters.

This will create a super smooth finish. Note the white dust on the Graphite paint on the upper drawers from sanding over the white letters.

Do not worry about that because once I go over this with my Annie Sloan Clear Wax- the residual dust will disappear.

Stay tuned and we will post soon showing the results using Annie’s Clear Wax over this piece.

Dark Wax Tips and Tricks (How To Use Dark Wax Suggestions) BELOW:

Ultimate Waxing Brush DARK BRISTLE Petite The Purple Painted Lady

WHO WILL WIN & WHEN?

TEN…YES, TEN LUCKY people will be randomly chosen on Sunday, June 21st, 2015 at 9 am Eastern Time!

HOW TO WIN:

Just LIKE my Facebook page and the give-a-way post!

And feel free to leave a helpful tip or comment regarding using Dark Wax. Anything that can help a fellow user would be appreciated!

DO I NEED TO USE DARK WAX?

Okay- I am guessing you are reading this post because you want to use dark wax. However, do you need to use the dark wax?  Of course not!  That is like saying you MUST have ketchup with your fries or sugar in your tea.    But, if you do use dark wax…..you REALLY want to have a clear wax base BEFORE applied prior to the dark wax since it:

1. Allows the dark wax to move easier

2. Prevents the stain in the dark wax from penetrating and staining the paint directly

3. Having a clear wax base allows you to remove the dark wax on top or lighten it, if needed.  (read on for more information)

DARK HAIRED PETITE WAX BRUSH DETAILS:

As for the dark bristles, no more will you accidentally pick up the wrong brush to apply your dark wax with! Same texture of bristle, same quality – just dark hairs!   Same size as the white hair petite brush that we have carried for the last 5 years!

Some TIPS for applying DARK WAX:

1. I always recommend having a clear wax application on your piece prior (there are some exceptions)
2. Try mixing the dark with clear wax together to lighten it up and make it more”spreadable.”
3. Try making the dark wax into a “glaze” by adding some Mineral Spirits. The amount of MS depends on the end result you want, but do not mix more than one to one.
4. As long as that clear wax base is there- if you put on too much dark wax- use some clear wax on a rag to work like an eraser.
5. Remember, once you have dark wax on…..if you apply more clear wax on top of it- it can lift some of the stain and change or RUIN what you just created and love.
6. Don’t leave the dark wax gummy or tacky on the flat surfaces since it will take FOREVER to set and cure. It is OK to leave it thicker in the crevices of grooves!
7. Experiment with it! You do not need to slather it every where initially.
8. Try applying a little dark wax strategically in corners or seams of door panels and use a rag to help soften/feather out the look. It can take some experience to manipulate on large pieces- like the side of a tall hutch – so, start off small and build your confidence.

9. Dark wax looks best when it has something to grip to.  Especially on large, flat surfaces it can be intimidating like I mentioned above.  So, at the very beginning of your project- use your paint brush and create a little texture with your Chalk Paint® – so when it dries, the dark wax has something to grip to.

The Purple Painted Lady Antibes Green Texture Dark Wax

10. Here is another great tip from Jaclyn Kulfan =>  My tip: if you only want the dark wax to to go into the small crevices, like the edges of a cabinet door, use a small artists paint brush to control the amount of wax that goes in the crevice if you do not want to darken the surrounding paint color. It helps those edges pop!

11. Here is another great tip from Jennifer Gipson Fry=>  I love mixing with mineral spirits. Also buffing with steel wool will take some off if there’s too much and shine your piece up well. I love how smooth and finished wax makes a piece!

12. Here is another great tip from Jennifer Cohn-Colwill =>Always have two wax brushes, one for clear, one for dark!

13.  Here is another great tip from Ann Linhorst =>  Have patience with dark wax. Step back and take a deep breath before panicking.  (The Purple Painted Lady recommends a glass of wine prior to using too)

14. Here is another great tip from Stephanie Amber => Start small…just a bit of dark wax – you can always add more   and  Marie Lou said, => My tip: Less is more

15. Here is another great tip from Nancy Steward => Have a wiping rag ready. If you aren’t sure how much “dark” you want wipe on the dark and wipe off. You can always add more but being ready to remove will give you a feel for how much you want.

Read more about using dark wax HERE.

Memorial Day 2014 (Shop Schedule)

Happy Memorial Day Everyone.

For many- it is a day off. For me personally- I work 6 days a week- every week- but Sundays and Holidays are sacred to me. If I was to be brutally honest though- I guess what helps me to actually sit back and relax- is that neither UPS or Federal Express work those days. Striking a balance in life- is something I struggle with- always have.

This weekend I reflect on all of those men and women who made the greatest sacrifice of all- their lives. There have been various “Memorial Day’s” established throughout the last couple hundred years, but on May 26, 1966, President Johnson signed a presidential proclamation naming Waterloo, New York, as the birthplace of Memorial Day.

I live about an hour away- and I think we may go and visit the festivities happening there. On Memorial Day- I plan to visit my father’s grave and place flowers and a flag there for him. He served in the Korean War on a ship called the USS Perry.

HOLIDAY SHOP SCHEDULE:
The Purple Painted Lady will be CLOSED in Macedon and Syracuse on Sunday, May 25th and Monday, May 26th. UPS and FedX are off also, so all on-line orders will ship out on Tuesday, May 27th.

And speaking of orders and ….paint- I love how patriotic the colors of Emperor’s Silk, Pure White and Napoleonic Blue Chalk Paint® look! Many people often ask about the plastic paint storage bottles that I show the paint in. They contain a whole quart and have an easy dispenser on the top. If interested in purchasing one- visit HERE.

If you order paint on-line, it can be a bit intimidating since colors may look differently on your monitor (especially depending on the quality of it.)

When it comes to Annie’s “reds” – I think there is enough of a contrast that it is pretty easy to understand and see the difference of them on-line. And typically – the photos you see are true representations of the color. But still- depending on the amount of light shining on a piece when a photo was taken – or filters used on a lens, it will influence how the color appears. So, when purchasing paint on-line- always look at a few examples of it (just google the color name) and also, feel free to contact The Purple Painted Lady and ask questions prior to buying.

DESCRIPTION OF EMPEROR’S SILK:
With that said- today we are featuring Emperor’s Silk! This is a bright red! Similar to the color of a Coca Cola can. Annie likes to say this bright pure red is like the red silk lining of a jacket, because of the way it looks. We love it used as an interior of a cupboard or drawer. It is the red -almost like a summer ripened tomato. Absolutely stunning. Add dark wax and you have a jaw dropping piece!

Since it is a primary color- it is a wonderful addition to your “painting pantry” because of all you can create when mixing it with other Chalk Paint® colors:

Now- another Chalk Paint® “red” color is Burgundy!

In October, 2014, Annie Sloan introduced this color to her palette of Chalk Paint® ~ …..it is …..Burgundy.

The Purple Painted Lady sells Chalk Paint at $34.95 per quart and ships same day!

The Purple Painted Lady has found Burgundy to be interesting, in that the color appears to be like a bright berry color when wet, but once dry, it deepens and is a significantly richer color. Check out the difference between the paint stick and the paint lid shown above.

We love this paired with both the clear and dark wax, but using dark wax deepens the color even more.

The images below shows it sandwiched between Emperor’s Silk and Primer Red as to understand the difference between them. Annie Sloan defines this color as a rich deep warm red the color of dark cherries. Most of Annie’s colors are 18th and 20th century inspired but this one comes from the 19th century when the discovery of Alizarin Crimson made this color possible for the first time to a large number of people.

Burgundy is a wonderful color to try mixing with others you may already have. Make a deep purple by mixing Burgundy with Napoleonic Blue Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan. On the left of the image, can you see how the Burgundy dries darker and deeper compared to when it is wet?
